From almost invisible eggs, tiny striped caterpillars emerge. They immediately begin feeding on the surrounding leaves of the milkweed flower, accumulating food for the transition to come. After two weeks they form a chrysalis, from which a monarch butterfly emerges after another two weeks.
- Scientific name: Danaus plexippus
- Features: thanks to its orange and black colouration, the monarch is one of the best known butterfly species. His remarkable transition is showcased in this four-part life cycle.
- Size and colour: The newly emerged caterpillars are black, white and yellow, in stark contrast to the emerald green chrysalis that follows. The most refined colors, however, are reserved for the adult monarch butterfly, which is about 9 cm long from tip to tip of the wings.
